Describe your congregation: We are diverse in range of people, so we do everything from Contemporary Praise and Worship to Traditional Hymns and some self-written songs.
Describe your ‘Worship Team Journey’: There was a need and no one else was available. I already played and sang, my son Ryan could play the drums, and my wife Sheila could play the piano so it was natural for us to step up and lead.
Which Scriptures are most meaningful for your worship ministry? John 4:24, “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
What must be done to prepare for a worship service? Careful consideration of the songs that we sing and a humble attitude that it is not about us, but about the One we are worshipping! I have found that since we have committed to a time of prayer prior to our services, our time of worshipping and sharing of the Word has experienced a greater anointing.
What are your favorite music resources? Favorite music are those songs that provide as much of the message of the gospel as possible. I believe that some of the Contemporary praise and worship addresses worship, but not necessarily the message that makes worship possible. Too many new songs are written for the believer’s experience and not enough really address the lost with a spirit filled anointed gospel message, like the old hymns used to have. So, with that said, we try to mix and match so that both believer and non-believer can be ministered to and participate.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned on the worship team? I don’t need to play like Phil Keaggy or sing like Russ Taff for the Lord to allow me to lead others into His throne room through worship music.
Can you provide an example of some of the songs you use in worship?
- My Redeemer Lives
- Look What God is Doing (Scott Wesley Brown)
- When we All Get To Heaven (Hymn)
- Bring the Rain (Mercy Me)
- Shout to the Lord (Darlene Schzech)
- We Cry Out (Ron Lemon)
- Revelation Song (Kari Jobe)
- How Great is Our God (Chris Tomlin)
- Victory in Jesus (Hymn)
- Worthy is the Lamb (Holland Davis)
